Invest in Everwood USA

We’re raising capital to build US production of recycled-plastic marine piles for South Florida’s marinas and docks, alongside our boards, DIY kits, and public furniture. Here’s the opportunity, what we’ve done so far, and how to start a conversation.

The opportunity

Docks that don’t rot out from under South Florida

Miami-Dade has more registered boats than any other county in Florida: 76,585 in 2024, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Every marina, dock, and seawall that serves them stands on piles.

The problem with treated-timber piles

  • Marine borers. Florida Sea Grant researchers found that pressure-treated lumber expected to last 20 to 30 years elsewhere can fail structurally in less than 10 years in Florida. Our water never gets cold enough to slow wood borers down.
  • Treatments that borers tolerate. In Florida waters, the gribble Limnoria tolerates standard creosote treatment, and the boring isopod Sphaeroma is quite tolerant of CCA (chromated copper arsenate) treatment.
  • Chemical leaching. NOAA Fisheries guidance notes that copper leaches from CCA- and ACZA-treated wood, mostly in the first days to months after installation, and that creosote is a coal-tar product made mostly of PAHs. NOAA says treated wood “cannot be considered categorically safe” in the water and requires project-by-project assessment.

Recycled plastic: a long-life alternative

Researchers at Rutgers’ plastics recycling program, who helped develop structural plastic lumber, wrote that recycled plastic lumber “resists marine borers, corrosion and does not leach toxic chemicals.” The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Rutgers developed and demonstrated composite fender, load-bearing, and sheet piles for waterfront use, and ASTM now publishes a standard specification for polymeric piles (ASTM D7258).

To be clear about the engineering: plastic lumber is less stiff than timber and can creep under sustained load (U.S. EPA). Every pile design has to be engineered, tested, and permitted for its use. That’s why testing and permitting are a core part of this raise.

What we’ve done

Real traction, built locally

Founder-funded and run from Miami Beach.

Plastic recycled in the US

~2 tonnes

About 4,400 lbs of plastic turned into Everwood products in the US so far, at about 15 lbs (7 kg) per standard board.

University of Miami

4 benches + 2 picnic tables

Installed on campus, including 2024 campus beautification work. See the project.

Warranty

15 years

Design warranty on Everwood products sold in the US, the same as in Chile.

  • Lumber in stock: a pallet of 1x2 and 1x4 recycled-plastic planks in Miami Beach, available now in our shop.
  • DIY kits: planter box and bird house kits are being added for families, schools, and camps.
  • Local construction use: Miami real estate developer Cong Vo uses Everwood boards as a wood substitute in residential and commercial renovations.
  • Community: Bay and beach cleanups through our Full Circle program.

What the raise funds

Building US production

US production of marine piles

Recycled-plastic piles for marinas, docks, and waterfront structures, made in the US.

Local fabrication and cutting shop

A South Florida shop to cut, drill, and assemble boards, kits, and public furniture close to our customers.

Inventory

Boards, profiles, and kit stock on hand in Miami, so contractors and cities don’t wait on long lead times.

Permitting and testing

Engineering tests and approvals for in-water use, including acceptance by Miami-Dade’s environmental regulators (DERM). Miami-Dade requires a Class I permit for work in, on, over, or upon tidal waters, including docks and piles.

Why Everwood USA

Local owner, proven manufacturing partner

Locally owned

Everwood USA is a Miami Beach company owned, run, and funded by founder Nick Diaz, working with a local team. Decisions, customers, and installs stay here.

Engineering and investment discipline

Nick brings an engineering background and years of investment and hedge fund management experience. Nick is also a freediver, divemaster, and fisherman who knows these waters and these docks firsthand.

Manufacturing partner with a track record

Desafío Ambiente / Everwood Chile, founded by Anita Farfán, makes recycled-plastic boards, slats, beams, and posts. In 2023 press it reported about 3,000 tonnes of plastic recovered over roughly eight years, 140+ industrial partners, and 140+ projects. With La Crianza and TriCiclos, its recycled-plastic material helped rebuild a trail in Torres del Paine using 9 tonnes of plastic waste.
